It’s a fun party, where you don’t have to take yourself or anyone around you too seriously.
Another highlight was definitely the drum and bass version of You’re the Voice. Who would have though you could actually get your groove on to John Farnham?!
If you don’t fancy yourself as a dancer, I can definitely guarantee you’ll get your kicks out of watching others dance.

Dancing, drinking, music of all ages, friends, laughter and even more dancing… What more could you want on a Saturday night?

Hot Dub Time Machine is a nostalgic dance party trip through all decades of music starting from 1954. Created by DJ Tom Loud, with the aid of audio and visuals, the audience is encouraged to dance the night away. There are certain dance moves to power the Hot Dub Time Machine into the each new decade. The dance moves are era themed such as the swing in the 50’s or the walking man in the 80’s, which leads to some interesting audience participation.

The show, which takes place in the Spiegeltent is conveniently located next to a bar in the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Drinks are allowed inside and you are able to get a stamp and pass in and out of the venue freely. So if you’re out of breath or not enjoying a certain era, you can take a break and have a drink.

If you don’t fancy yourself as a dancer, I can definitely guarantee you’ll get your kicks out of watching others dance. As the decades fly by, the patrons seem to get progressively more inebriated and lose all inhibitions… and coordination for that matter. Trust me, there is some quality viewing in store. A special mention goes out to a tough looking security guard, who after standing so threatening with his arms folded for most of the night, suddenly broke out into a full hip gyration when Milkshake by Kelis started to play. Another highlight was definitely the drum and bass version of You’re the Voice. Who would have though you could actually get your groove on to John Farnham?!

It’s a fun party, where you don’t have to take yourself or anyone around you too seriously. Just dance and laugh and smile and recount some of the most triumphant/tragic eras of music. Rest assured, you are probably NOT going to be the worst dancer there!

By Kosta Jaric

The highlight of the night however was “Move Bitch” originally by Ludicrous, which the group turned into a ridiculously saccharine-sweet rendition of his ode to running over his baby mama, putting a smile on just about every face.

If you’re not a jazz fan, figuring out what the cover song actually is can be half the fun…

Whoever thinks that jazz can’t be popped or locked to is, well, probably right, but the gang from The Jazz Hop Experiment will make sure their mash of jazz styles with hip hop standards becomes your cover version de rigueur.

Arcade Lane is open and ready for business once again at this year’s Adelaide Fringe and the venue looks to bring in the punters with a smattering of musical acts on an almost-nightly basis. At the opening, a cool venue was filled with cool people with the night surely being a taste of the atmosphere to come in the best-kept secret most people seem to miss (unlike the Garden).

The Jazz Hop Experiment gave a taste of their self-titled show for this year’s Adelaide Fringe at the Promethean in March. Amongst the crowds clustered along the skinny alley, the small stage at the end was heaving with four vocalists and six (yes, six) musicians.

Infused with elements of (predominantly) jazz, blues and funk, the band give a great twist to Snoop classics “Gin and Juice” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot” (complete with boogie-woogie harmonies), while making the Hilltop Hoods’ “The Nosebleed Section” sound less urban and more zoot suit.

Salt N Pepa, Missy Elliott and even Tom Waits get props from the easily likeable group. The highlight of the night however was “Move Bitch” originally by Ludicrous which the group turned into a ridiculously saccharine-sweet rendition of his ode to running over his baby mama, putting a smile on just about every face.

There’s a lot of fun to be had when these guys perform. If you’re not a jazz fan, figuring out what the cover song actually is can be half the fun, and with the eclectic audience either shyly tapping their toes or almost busting out their full swing dancing repetoire, chances are you’re going to really enjoy it. Unless you’re a wet rag. But you’ll probably absorb the fun anyway.

Fringe Benefits members can get tickets for just $20 to THE JAZZ HOP EXPERIMENT at Adelaide Fringe 2012!
When: March 9 11pm, March 11 8pm, March 17 11pm

The return of the UK’s Slow Club to Australia in February 2012 is without doubt set to be one of the musical highlights of the summer.

Rebecca Taylor and Charles Watson have been friends and partners in rock for almost ten year. Their first full-length album Yeah, So was a musical gem with Pitchfork describing how the “Sheffield boy-girl duo nail precious, vulnerable feelings over the course of their sweet
(but not twee or saccharine) indie pop debut”.

This year, Slow Club released Paradise an album both swooning and raucous – a take on doo-wop with a frazzled, fragile representation of soul inspired rock. Paradise is certainly a product of a band whose members divide their obsessions between Destiny’s Child and Noise-pop. And Slow Club live is as much of a delight as is Slow Club on record.

We implore you, do not miss Slow Club when they return to Australia this summer.

MONSTERS and other related quirkiness by SUE NINHAM

WHEN: Friday Feb 17th at 6pm

WHERE: Paper String Plastic Gallery, 99a Hindley Street, Adelaide

HOW MUCH: Free Entry!

The colourful monsters characterising Adelaide Fringe 2012 have been let loose throughout Adelaide and across the country – on posters, thongs, stubby holders, t-shirts, two buses, four minis and even a tram. And now the whole monster family will be on offer this Friday 17 February when artist Sue Ninham reveals the monster story in her exhibition featuring 140 water-colour creations at Paper String Plastic art gallery at 99a Hindley Street at 6pm.

‘Monsters and Other Related Quirkiness’, will be opened by Fringe Director and Chief Executive Greg Clarke who personally selected nine of Ninham’s iconic monsters to play a monumental role in the upcoming 2012 Fringe season. Sue is thrilled to finally unveil the full monster story, which she began creating after her father passed away two years ago and she needed to rejuvenate herself, taking a break from her usual large-scale abstract watercolour and oil paintings.

“The monsters are a quirky bunch of characters, who came to life not only as artwork, but also with a name and a biography. I have enjoyed creating such a family – they have put a smile on my face every day,” said Ninham from her Adelaide studio.
